A break from real cars. As a side hobby, I’m an avid follower of public transportation developments in my motherland. In 2003, Hong Kong introduced super-low-floor (SLF) double decker buses and Euro IV emissions. KMB, the largest bus operator, also debuted an ugly AF bronze livery to replace the previous white. The modern styling helped ease the pain and we all grew accustomed to it. Volvo’s SLF entrant was the Volvo B10TL platform, replacing the old Super Olympian. The 12-metre B10 chassis sported KMB’s first order of Wright bus bodies.

Nearly 15 years later in late 2017, KMB debuted a much sharper red colour scheme. It’s upbeat and instantly likeable, although cynics cried London Clone. The Wright Eclipse body is now in its third generation, and the chassis is also the evolved Volvo B8TL with Euro VI emissions.

The newer model buses also received gadgets like WiFi hotspots, USB ports, etc.

The Volvo’s main competitor in Hong Kong is the Alexander Dennis Enviro series.

These 1:76 scale models are produced by a local company, 80M, which also operates its own retail chain. The detail and accuracy are quite good for the size. Retail is about US$50.

I have two buses on my desk. The VDL is wearing local Helsinki area colors but it had some realism issue. I think we don’t have that exact VDL model with that kind of door configuration operating in Helsinki area.

We test buses on chassis dynamometer so other colleagues have received these too from our customers. We have tested at least one Wright bodied B5TL and several Enviro models that were brought from UK.

They’re quite good for public buses. All-A/C fleet, fully cushioned seats with full-height seatbacks, and on the newer ones there are WiFi hotspots and full-colour route/map displays.

There used to be TV programming, too, but after about a decade the ad revenue was disappointing (smart phones didn’t help) and the screens were removed.
